Welcome to Lykion Ton Ellinidon!
Lykion Ton Ellinidon is a volunteer, non-profit
Hellenic cultural organization. Our current educational program provides Greek
folk dance instruction to
Greek-American youth and adults from the greater Atlanta area. This unique program
enables our youth to enrich their education about their Hellenic heritage
and culture. In a creative and enjoyable format, the curriculum includes geography,
history, music theory and song, dance (steps, style, body language,
stage direction), spiritual growth, myths and legends.
With an enrollment of almost 100 participants of all
ages, classes are divided into groups based on grade/age and experience level.
Classes are held
weekly throughout the year, with frequent rehearsals in preparation for major
performances. For the 2003-2004 school year, classes take place each Monday
at the
Annunciation Cathedral (6:40-7:20 p.m. for Kindergarten through 9th Grade, and
7:30-9:30 p.m. for 10th Grade and older.) Annual tuition for the 2003-2004
school year is $50 per student.
The dance repertoire consists of over 200 traditional
dances and songs from all over Greece, Cyprus and Asia Minor, as well as contemporary
Greek dances.
The costume wardrobe is representative of more than 20 villages, regions, or
islands of Greece, and provides traditional dress for all age groups.
Our instructors have valuable years of experience both
performing and teaching Greek dance. Instructors and students attend folkloric
seminars and
workshops all over the United States and Greece. The adult performance group,
known as Troupe Hellas, travels throughout the Southeast to perform in various
festivals, civic affairs, and cultural events. All age groups perform together
in the annual Atlanta Greek Festival each Fall.
With support and enthusiasm from our Atlanta community,
Lykion Ton Ellinidon has been able to grow and continually improve our program!
