The Cathedral is a
fitting climax to a series of milestones which have marked the development of the Parish
since 1905 and which include also the following significant events:
Purchase of a section of Greenwood Cemetery in 1912 for interment of departed loved ones in the Parish. Construction on the premises of a Chapel in 1928 by the Ladies Society and named St. Barbara for the Society's Patron Saint. Founding of the first Greek School in 1914 and the first Sunday School in 1930, both housed today in the beautiful, functional educational building.
Initial construction of the original Hellenic Community Center on Cheshire Bridge Road, was begun in 1954, through the generosity of Parish organizations, spearheaded by The Danaos Society, and individual members. The original building was completed in 1956, with the addition of a swimming pool in 1967 and a baseball diamond in 1969. A gymnasium was added in 1979. It served the Community until 1999. In 1973, a voluntary pledge system was initiated, and in 1974, the annual Greek Festivals were launched with enormous success. The parish celebrated its 75th Anniversary in 1980 and commemorated the event during the 25th Biennial Clergy-Laity Congress which was held in Atlanta that summer, with our Cathedral as the host parish. In 1980, '81 and '82, additional properties on Clairmont Road were purchased by the parish, and a Centennial Committee was formed to provide the direction for expansion and continued development over the next 25 years. |
